Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry

About the Museum

Immerse yourself in Lake District History at the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry. Inside you can explore a typical Victorian farmers home from the food in the kitchen, to the elegance of the parlour.  Other galleries tell the story of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the industrial history of this beautiful part of the world. Here you can discover the Lake District’s past in farming, mining, tanning, and many other ways that people have made a living amongst the fells.

The Museum allows you to discover how people have lived in the Lake District and how the unique landscape has shaped their lives. You can also find out about Arthur Ransome, one of the Lake District’s most famous authors, and colourful characters. And why not stroll down the Victorian high street before you go to find out about the toys, food, and even medicines of the past.

The Museum of Lakeland life is a must see for anyone interested in the history of this beautiful area, and with changing exhibitions looking at all aspects of Lakeland Life there will always be something new to discover.

Welcome to Lakeland Motor Museum

Explore our fascinating collection of over 30,000 exhibits that trace the development of road transport throughout the twentieth century - cycles, motorbikes, motor cars and automobilia.

Housed in a converted mill in the heart of the Lake District, we’re minutes from Lake Windermere and offer joint tickets with Windermere Lake Cruises and other local attractions.

Much more than just a motor museum, our local history and period shopping displays, authentic recreations and picturesque riverside cafe makes it a great day out for the whole family.

OPEN TODAY 9:30am to 5:30pm

We're open every day except Christmas Day

Head towards Windermere and at the top of the hill, you'll arrive here. This is Windermere - the town, that is. The 11-mile stretch of water down in the valley is Windermere. This is never 'the lake', it's a mere. There's only one lake in the Lake District - Bassenthwaite Lake.

In Windermere (the town) you'll find shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and takeways. There are plenty of souvenirs, postcards and local produce on sale there.

The Beatrix Potter™ experience

The Beatrix Potter™ experience begins with a 4-minute introductory film. The doors then open to welcome visitors to enter the main exhibition.

Area 2: Jemima Puddle-duck's woodland glade and Mr Toad's underground home
